What is a Trashion Show?

A Trashion Show is a fashion show that celebrates environmentalism and innovation through wearable art created from used, thrown-out, found and/or repurposed elements. It calls attention to fast fashion pollution and landfills. It sparks creativity and conversation. A Trashion Show raises awareness about recycling and waste reduction while inspiring ingenuity and fun.

For Earth Day 2022 we are hosting a Virtual Trashion Show so students can participate in the safest way possible. On Friday, April 22, 2022 via Zoom, we will showcase the trashion outfits (submitted by April 11) students made through a video compilation.

How to Participate

Design an original outfit - individually or as a team - from trash, reclaimed, or recycled material that can safely be worn on the body.

Who can submit?

K-12 students in Burbank (BUSD, private schools, homeschool) are eligible to enter and win cash prizes, as well as put their creative outfits on display. Solo projects and teams welcomed!

Dates to Remember

Guidelines

  • Have fun with the theme! Reduce / Reuse / Refashion

  • At least 75% of the outfit should be made from would-be discarded materials. You may use, but are not limited to, plastic, paper, cardboard, metal, glass, and fabric.

  • If you need base fabric to adhere items, please do not purchase something new. You may acquire such items from a garage sale, thrift shop, or borrow from a friend or family member, etc.

  • All garments must be clean, safe to wear, and touch. No sharp edges, no glass, no liquids, or food waste.

  • You may sew, stitch, tape, hot glue, rivet, staple or do whatever it takes to hold pieces together.

  • Designers may not take items out of recycling or trash cans, other than their own, nor remove items from the Recycling-Solid Waste Collection Center or recycling centers.

  • Don’t use anything new. Material cannot be bought. (For example, ziplock bags can be collected after use, washed and dried, instead of being bought.)

  • This is an all-ages event - please keep designs modest.

  • Submit 3-5 Images of your outfit (show front, back, multiple angles, closeups of details, etc.).

  • Submit a Video of someone wearing the outfit. We want to see the model walking in your outfit as well as close-ups of the materials used.

Curious whether a material is recyclable or not?

Check out the Burbank Recycle Center's 'Where it Goes' for lots of user-friendly info.

Accessories

  • Only accessories made by the designers that are made from recycled or reused materials can be worn with the outfit, but are not required.

  • Shoes are optional, but if worn they do not have to be made by the designer, nor made of recycled or reusable materials.

Hair & Makeup

You may style the hair and/or makeup of your model but it will not be part of the judging criteria.

Judging

Entries will be evaluated on creativity, design, originality, craftsmanship and on their environmental message that connects the fashion, material used, and the material’s effect on the environment.
